Gustav Klimt's painting serves as proof of his many inspirations. With his unique style, he purposefully and proudly merged his inspirations onto a single canvas. The main themes in his works were female figures and landscapes. His later works are characterized by his earlier naturalist styles and employ symbolic elements to convey psychological ideas and emphasize art's freedom from traditional culture. "The Kiss" is Klimt's most popular work. The black and gray rectangles of the man's cloak contrast with the woman's vibrant, circular, floral motifs and wavy lines. They are surrounded by golden rain blessing the fertile earth. This painting is a mixture of various art movements. The gilded parts of the painting are reminiscent of medieval and Byzantine religious art, and this artistic choice was considered sacrilegious. The composition reflects the influence of Japanese prints. The detailed patterns on the cloaks resemble mosaics that Klimt admired during his visits to Italy. Finally, Klimt also incorporated the modern Art Nouveau style into this work.
