Meet Semu. This cute, little peanut butter and jelly sandwich is actually a robot, teaching children in their last year of kindergarten and first grade coding principles and skills.

This robot doesn't require a tablet, smartphone, or computer to be programmed; programs are created simply by arranging the correct sequence of physical code cards. As the robot moves across the code cards, the OID optical scanner at the bottom of the robot reads each code card individually and executes the corresponding program. Then, place the robot on the grid-arranged map cards, and the robot will run the program. You can program the robot to move in different directions, activate additional mechanisms, light up its LED, play various sounds, and react to different function cards. The integrated output hardware allows for the creation of simple robotics projects with hands or other moving parts that react to instructions defined in the program.

Through a full series of construction and coding lessons, this robot kit also teaches physical engineering and problem-solving skills. All 30 lessons are aligned with computer science education standards developed by the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), as well as the Code.org curriculum. The lessons become progressively more challenging as you work through the illustrated instruction booklet, making this kit suitable for children as young as four years old, with parental supervision and assistance, up to eight years old. The lessons cover the following six core programming areas: sequencing, loops, events, conditional statements, functions, and variables.

In addition to Semu, there are five other stories, each presenting model-building and coding challenges with related lessons: a mouse navigating a maze to find cheese; a penguin exploring a zoo; a soccer player kicking a ball into a goal; a fire truck extinguishing a fire; a factory robot performing tasks in a factory. The colorful, illustrated instruction manual guides young learners through the coding lessons and helps them assemble various models.
